Kickin' it Dojo Style!

Before we get in to the R & R stage of the pass, we thought why not "kick" it off with a bang. So we looked through the options and winded up at Robert Lee Martial Arts Centre for a action packed hour of Tae Kwon Do. We have to admit the nerves were kicking in as we stepped into the "Dojo" and found ourselves surrounded by highly trained black belters all high kicking, jabbing and punching with fierce intensity... turns out this was actually the youth group- the eldest participant may have been 12 but we're not sure. Within a few minutes and after quick introductions to our master and fellow classmates we started to ease up a bit.

Before getting into the heart of the class, we warmed up and stretched. If you think it's all just kicking and punching, guess again. We have never done so many push-ups in our lives and the ab workout was INTENSE! Our Master explained that normally a quarter of the one hour class is devoted to cardio, an essential part of the fitness training. There was a wide variety of skill levels ranging from the beginner "white belt" to the most advanced "black belt." We quickly realized that we were in the lowest rank possible - no belt! But we totally felt welcome and the Master took the time to explain to us everything that was happening during the class. We were given one-on-one training on self-defence techniques - we dare anybody to try and grab our purses! And learned the basic stances for kicking, jabbing and punching. Gin having taken ONE Tae Kwon Do class fifteen years ago was convinced she was ready for the Roundhouse kick and so asked for a demonstration. Much to our surprise, our Master happily pulled out a heavy bag and showed us the proper technique. Within minutes, Gin was roundhousing the stuffing out of the bag!

We HIGHLY recommend this class to everybody! We seriously had no idea what to expect going in, but after one class we were excited for more. Intermediate classes are Tuesday and Thursday nights at the Robert Lee Martial Arts Centre on Roblin Blvd (across from Poppa's Greek Restaurant). If you feel like your skills are far superior, the advanced black belt class is on Monday and Wednesday nights. Just call in and let them know you are coming. Show up in workout gear (no need for the traditional "Dobok" uniform for your first class).

P.S. We advise getting a pedicure from Tiber River before going because you'll spend the entire time in bare feet... we probably should have chosen that offer first, maybe next time.

Falling Head over Heels...

We can't help but feeling inspired by this gorgeous pic. As the leaves start to fall, it is easy to want to retreat indoors and hibernate so.... this year, we want to be different. We think that the Lifestyle Pass is the answer!! Browsing through page after page of amazing offers reveals so many opportunities. Now the only question is - what to try first?
